HOME | Meet The Moment Well

Where do you feel “AT HOME”? ⁣
⁣
As someone who has been self-employed and somewhat nomadic most of my adult life, the answer to this question used to revolve around relationships, and simply included *anywhere with people I love.* ⁣
⁣
☀️ However, I’ve noticed over the past few years that the answer has shifted to actual physical locations…wild places, places of raw beauty...places I have to make a considerable effort to visit.⁣
⁣
💝 “Home” is a bit less about the comfort, care and joy I feel being in the presence of those that I love, and increasingly about 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲” 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 as it has grown and been shaped by experiences in these places. ⁣
⁣
🌍 Home is anywhere I tap into the beauty and simplicity of the earth…Anywhere I have become more present, more aware, more in tune with the rhythm of my breath and heartbeat, and more in touch with how I am related to and relating with all living things around me. ⁣
⁣
🏜 Home is deeply connected to the climbing areas I’ve returned to over and over, that have offered a reflection of what I have both discovered and forgotten about myself and about life.⁣
⁣
🦋 “Returning home” in this way gives me the gift to really SEE - up close - the work I still have (and get) to do, while being challenged, scared and elated in mountains, deserts, canyons and beyond.
⁣
🐾 Home is also in community in these places…playing, sharing, supporting, learning, and growing. ⁣
⁣

As a child, I used to think of dandelions as the wishing flower…I now see them as pure potential plants! 💫⁣
⁣
Even scientists are studying a unique air pattern that occurs – involving a “porous parachute” - that creates a vortex of air, which sucks the dandelion seed upwards, allowing it to travel as much as 100 miles with very little energy consumption!⁣
⁣
While I’m not sure I fully understand all of that, I am impressed and in awe of it! 💡⁣
⁣
AND…the bottom line is that there are multiple lessons we’re offered from nature here:⁣
⁣
1. 🍃 Weeds = flowers = fluffy plants = a multitude of seeds and new opportunities planted everywhere! ⁣
⁣
2. 🍃 In this case - SPACE - or tiny holes in the canopy of the parachute, actually allow for further travel…⁣
⁣
3. 🍃 WE are also porous energetically! ⁣We can let things move ‘through us” versus *effort-ing* so much to get things done all by ourselves! ⁣
✨ (Ie. We have more resources we can draw on versus relying only on ourselves.) ✨⁣

It was a sunset moonrise kinda ride tonight…🚴🏻‍♀️🌝⁣

Within 15 minutes of looking back to notice the fiery orange ball dropping, I came up a hill and around a bend and saw a golden egg shaped moon beaming in brilliance!⁣
⁣
Normally I don’t get off the bike to take photos…⁣
⁣
Often I don’t see the glistening moment in front of me – the way the fading light shimmers on the newly poof-ed dandelions…perhaps because I’m lost in thought, focused on keeping a cadence, or tuned into some thought provoking podcast. ⁣
⁣
Other times I DO notice and don’t stop…⁣
⁣
This evening’s sights were possible because I was in motion, shifting from one amazing lit up field and “farewell” to the day…to the next open field greeting the night. ⁣
⁣
It made me consider my good fortune in being present for both moments…simply because I was present while in motion…AND in the right place at the right time…⁣
⁣
💫 How do we show up and TAKE IN THE MOMENT, while not being attached to an outcome or expectation?⁣
⁣
💫 What might we experience by instead letting the moment shift and change like a kaleidoscope that, if we are present, TAKES US IN?⁣
⁣

When given the opportunity to say a few words about one of my closest friends on her wedding day several years ago, I remember initially being concerned that I wouldn’t do justice in describing the amazingness of this woman…⁣
That I would get nervous and shrink my message out of shyness, stage-fright or self-doubt around articulating such an important message.⁣

However, when we share from our heart, when we fully let ourselves be embodied with (in my case) the love, grace and kindness that we wholeheartedly admire and are inspired by, IT RADIATES OUT! 💗⁣

A friend of mine likes to say this, and it often comes to mind for me when I catch myself noticing something I could have easily overlooked.

Birds in flight, particularly like these in a formation, often remind me of several things:⁣

*That I am not alone, and that there is support in everything around me - much of which I may not actually see, but can sense.⁣
⁣
*That there is an ease and beauty to be found in the rhythms of nature.
⁣
*That reminders and synchronicities are everywhere and in perfect timing, albeit sometimes subtle. My job is to be paying attention, so that I don’t miss them.⁣ 😉

I’ve been thinking about shadows a lot lately - in all senses of the word. This is what I’ve noticed:⁣

OUR SHADOW depicts our current form in a distinct moment in time.⁣

OUR SHADOW exists due to the contrast of light, and how the light reaches us. We can sometimes choose the shape of the shadow, but not how far it will reach.⁣

OUR SHADOW may or may not become apparent to us, depending on where we are focused.⁣
⁣
Neither OUR SHADOW nor the light illuminating us equal the sum total of our being. ⁣

What shapes YOUR perspective?

When your new tail light is the same size as your toddler friend...and when that friend sees the world with curiosity and wonder *everyday* ...

LETTING GO is the absence of holding on so tightly, though not at all about being complacent.

Regardless of how it falls, there will be compost, there will be buds. Both hold a promise of new life.

“Y’ALL” is a favorite word of mine, even when it’s occasionally met with curiosity, cringes and giggles.

Despite leaving the Texan accent behind in hopes to better communicate through a new language in a new country after college, I kept using “y’all”.

I’ve always liked how “y’all” still represented everyone: well beyond ‘guys’, girls, kids, older people...

It represents people of different beliefs, people with different bodies and abilities, people born in different countries, people who choose various ways to live, love, communicate, worship and be...people who celebrate life and living - with food, singing, dancing, ceremony, ritual, silence, art and prayer...

While watching this video recently with my young 6 year old friends, they commented on no one wearing masks and zoomed in on the individual in the center with the green shirt, who was managing not to get wet at all. I found myself watching this scene with a different awareness than I experienced it last year in Atlanta -- pondering the notion of “feeling free...and uninhibited” in a public place.
Such is the privilege of a white, cisgendered, heterosexual, able bodied, American woman...

The lens through which I imagine a world where we are all “living freely” and “have freedom” continues to shift, continues to need cleaning, so that I can better recognize the realities that exist, whether or not I have chosen to “see” them (both outwardly and inwardly).

What will you do with your 1,440 minutes TODAY?
On Sunday I spent 17 and a half of those 1,440 minutes kneeling in quiet remembrance of the life taken from George Floyd.
Over the past 2 weeks I have been reminded of how few minutes in a day - in a week - I spend choosing to show up for people of color.

Showing up - choosing not to have my head in the sand or be silent about the realities of racism in our society, is a choice to continue asking hard questions, having uncomfortable conversations, and listening to voices that have been silenced or quieted. It’s a commitment to continuing to show up for my own education and unlearning of biased beliefs, behaviors and benefits from being born white in the U.S. It’s a choice to be consistent in supporting causes, businesses and entities focused on social justice and racial healing.
Recognizing the constant ness of this commitment feels DAUNTING. Yet it is absolutely the side of history I want to be on. It is a drop in a massive ocean to heal centuries of systemic racism and oppression. I am aware that I will need to pace myself and more than anything else, treat this like an Ultra (100 mi) run...
JUST KEEP MOVING FORWARD.

COURAGE is my word of the year, though it’s taken me 6 days to post about something that’s crystal clear in my heart... 💡
When I first came across this book recommendation, I was definitely turned off by the title. Isn’t it more powerful to focus on what you want to bring into the world versus its opposite? (ie. Couldn’t another word be used to describe the opposite of being racist?)

Yet, just a few chapters in and I fully get it (the title I mean). Any other term for not being racist actually doesn’t acknowledge the existence of racism - WHICH IS THE ENTIRE POINT. 💡
Grateful to have the privilege to be slow in this understanding... and humbled in recognizing this is lifelong work - there is no “arriving”. This is the time for listening...this is also the time to do more than listen.

Rounding the corner to see this collection of flamingos on my walk, I was initially startled, thinking I had interrupted something. 🦩

Then cracking up considering the implications of them hanging out together this close (either as a family unit or rogue birds not practicing social distancing!) made me recognize how quick I’ve been these past few weeks to welcome the humor, the lightness, the silliness in my days...
Both as relief from the heaviness, and as proof that it is always there.

When I pause in moments of tension to bring to mind something that makes me smile, it is so readily something goofy, childlike, absurd and ridiculous. 🦩

It’s this moment of lightness (when oxytocin is released), that I remember that I am connected to everything around me. That I can set the heavy thing down for a bit. That I can share this lightness in my smile, in my words, in my presence - with others.

CLARITY...amazing how desirable and helpful it is when we are choosing our path.
For all of 2017 this was my word of the year, as I was in an ongoing state of seeking and listening. I knew I needed to make a significant shift, I just didn’t know in exactly which direction. As you may guess, clarity didn’t come during that year that I was focusing so strongly on it. In fact it didn’t come for at least another 18 months!

I still seek clarity regularly in small and major decisions, though I’m learning to recognize synchronicities in timing I cannot predict, and practice patience and awareness with myself and the process.
